Anxiety disorders are suffered by more than forty million Americans. Examples of these disorders are panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, phobias, and generalized anxiety disorders. Many of these disorders are debilitating to the sufferers, interfering with both their personal and professional lives. Thankfully, there are many anxiety treatments out there.
If you think that you suffer from an anxiety disorder, the first person you should see is your family doctor. Tests are necessary to make sure that there isn’t another medical condition responsible for the symptoms. Once it’s determined that the symptoms are the result of an anxiety disorder, the next step is to seek out a mental health professional.
Anxiety treatment can include medications. While medications are not enough to cure anxiety disorders, they can help the sufferer deal with the symptoms. Antidepressants alter the chemistry of the brain. Most begin to work on some indicators of anxiety disorder immediately; however, it can take up to six weeks for the full effects to be felt.
SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, are also antidepressants. They help brain cells communicate with each other by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is involved in the regulation of learning, sleep, and moods. They have been shown to be very effective in anxiety treatment. Beta-blockers, usually used to treat heart conditions, can also be prescribed for anxiety treatment. They can help prevent the physical conditions which accompany most anxiety disorders.
Medications are used to help control the signs of anxiety disorders while the patient receives psychotherapy. Cognitive-behavioral therapy, or CBT, helps anxiety disorder sufferers change the way they think and how they react to anxiety-inducing situations. For example, a person with OCD who is anxious about germs and ritualistically washes his or her hands many times a day is taught to wait for longer periods of time in between such activities.
Those with other phobias or disorders learn how to face their fears through this anxiety treatment. The CBT therapist accompanies the anxiety disorder patient through role-playing to actual encounters. CBT therapists also teach relaxation techniques such as deep breathing.
CBT only works when the anxiety disorder sufferer is ready to undertake the challenge of facing his or her fears. It must be specific to their individual anxiety disorder. This anxiety treatment usually lasts about three months. It may incorporate group therapy.
Anxiety treatment is often more effective when it includes support groups. These groups may include resources from the internet or your local member of the clergy. These should not be a replacement for a certified therapist.
Exercise can be a great addition to anxiety treatments. It boosts the brain’s natural creation of serotonin. Meditation has also been found to enhance anxiety treatments, as it helps calm the physical symptoms of anxiety disorder.
Finally, family is a very important factor in anxiety treatment. Families should never trivialize the disorder of the sufferer. They can offer support but need to be careful not to enable the anxiety disorder patient.

The short but confusing answer to this question is yes…and no. It depends on what is meant by “cure” for anxiety. If you are looking for a quick fix, something like a pill you can take and with the snap of your fingers you’re cured, then no, there is no “cure” for anxiety. However, if by cure you mean treatment, something that in time will help you overcome your anxiety, then the answer would be “Yes, absolutely!”
First of all, it’s important to realize that anxiety is not one specific thing; it can range from general uneasiness and feelings of stress and fear, usually called generalized anxiety disorder or general anxiety, to full blown panic or anxiety attacks, which to a lot of people are so intense they feel like they are dying.
Anxiety treatments range from prescription medication to self- help and natural remedies. The medical community usually treats panic attacks with anti-anxiety medication, cognitive behavioral therapy or a combination of these two. Although helpful in some situations, anti anxiety medication is not a cure for anxiety in itself.
Cognitive behavioral therapy is a type of therapy that focuses on changing the thoughts and behavior of the sufferer. The idea behind cognitive behavioral therapy is that our negative thoughts and behavioral patterns are the cause of our anxiety. Through changing our habits, we can overcome our anxiety.
Whether you are in therapy or not, there are a lot of things you can do yourself to improve your situation. Even if you are currently seeing a therapist or counselor, that person can not be with you twenty four seven, so it’s important that you are proactive, developing good coping mechanism. Being prepared doesn’t mean that you should always expect to have an anxiety attack, but rather that you know what to do should it happen.
In addition to working on your thoughts and habits, either with a therapist or using an anxiety system at home, there are some simple but powerful things you can try to reduce your anxiety. One of the first things you can do is stop the intake of alcohol, drugs and caffeine. All of these substances can cause anxiety reactions even in people who don’t suffer from an anxiety disorder.
Next, you can start getting some moderate exercise. Studies now show that regular exercise reduces anxiety. According to CNN, at least half an hour a day seems to get the best long term effects, but as little as tenor fifteen minutes can help change your mood immediately. Regular exercise can also help you sleep better which in turn can improve your anxiety situation.
Try meditation. Studies indicate that certain types of meditation can have a positive effect in relieving anxiety.
Pay attention to what you eat; are you getting the nutrients that you need? Are you eating enough fresh fruit and vegetables? Could there be something in your food the you are having an allergic reaction to? Studies show that there could be a correlation between certain foods and anxiety and depression.
There might not be a quick and easy cure for anxiety available, but most types of anxiety disorders are still very treatable and there are many things you can do to help your own situation.

Many people experience symptoms of high anxiety or panic attacks when visiting the doctor. Rapid heartbeat, sweating of the palms, and wanting to leave the appointment are common reactions or symptoms of high stress. When I first began having problems with panic attacks I went to my doctor and I remember having my blood pressure reading sky high. This happened several times. I knew it was just because of my anxiety since I took my own blood pressure reading regularly. It always seemed a little strange when they would tell me my blood pressure was really high and would ask me if there was any reason for it. Duh, I have a problem with panic attacks. Of course that is why! The reason I want to point this out is because many people have high anxiety in these situations and it is quite common. So, don’t feel like something is terribly wrong with you. It may be uncomfortable, but quite normal as well. Two things you should take note of if you feel extremely nervous in similar situations are:

One of the simplest and most effective forms of anxiety therapy is to focus your mind on something other than what is causing your anxiety. In other words, stay busy. I realize this may not seem possible when in the Doctor’s office, giving a speech, or at a job interview, but if you really think about it there are things you can do to eliminate your anxiety. One thing I have used to keep my mind occupied during a speech is to get the audience involved. If I have high anxiety during a speech and feel that I have to continue to speak for an extended duration of time, well that is not a comforting feeling and it can trigger panic. However, if I can get the audience talking, especially if a group conversation results, I find my anxiety is significantly reduced. In fact, I even feel confident and can be very a effective speaker. This isn’t always easy to do. Not every presentation lends itself to this and not every audience is receptive to adding comments or asking questions. But, if you can engage them into the presentation it can take the pressure off of you and make it more of a group discussion. That is only one example of anxiety therapy you can provide for yourself. If you think about it enough you can probably come up with ideas on how you can change what you normally do to relive the pressure that is on you and help to eliminate panic attacks. Just remember, stay busy with something other than what is causing your anxiety. Occupy yourself with activities that are comfortable and you may find that anxiety is no longer a problem. It may take some practice and effort, but it is one option you have in defeating panic attacks.

Medications that are used in treating problems relating to anxiety do not always work for depression. It is quite unfortunate that though the two conditions go together they do not work for the same kind of medication. Luckily, doctors do have a separate list of medicines that are useful for both these symptoms at the same time. Zoloft and Paxil are two medications that work better for anxiety depression. The brand named drugs and the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors work pretty well for both.
SSRI’s list of depression anxiety medications has been proven clinically to help solve many a number of conditions. They block what is called the neurotransmitter serotonin in getting reabsorbed by certain type of cells present in the brain. This leaves serotonin in larger quantities in the brain. This neurotransmitter is linked with both depression and anxiety.
Drugs that are classified as SSRI’s
Lots of well known brands of depression anxiety medications are now available in the market. Lexapro, Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil are a few of the common names.
Forms of anxiety that can be treated by SSRI’s
The SSRI’s are quite capable of treating anxiety disorders. All antidepressants do not treat them as well as the SSRI’s do. Medications of anxiety depression like Celexa, Paxil and Luvox are been proved as useful in being able to treat the whole spectrum of disorders of anxiety inclusive of generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety and post traumatic disorder of stress.
Time taken to work
Anti depressants take quite some time to work unlike the anti anxiety medications which work in a few hours after they are taken. The anti depressants may take some days or even several weeks for the full effect of it to be felt. It is important for the patients to follow the instructions well if they are taking these depression anxiety medications. Dosage is the most important.
Side effects
These medicines may be very useful, but the do come out with a lot of side effects. They are however considered safer than many anti depressants. Over dose of these wil nto cause danger.
Some of the side effects include:
1. upset stomach
2. sexual desire is reduced
3. you may get headache
4. drowsiness, insomnia, restlessness and agitation
5. gaining weight
6. serotonin syndrome – very rare side effect. It can however be life threatening. It is caused due to high amounts of serotonin in the brain. SSRI’s and other medications are not prescribed together for this reason only. When supplements like St.John’s wort is taken with SSRI’s it may cause problems.

When medication does not work, anxiety sufferers seek further help, such as natural treatments for anxiety. Panic is something normal, it is part of anyone`s life however it does become disturbing in severe forms of anxiety.

Therefore things change when anyone starts to experience panic attacks, or anxiety everyday. Not every anxiety sufferer has panic attacks, however over 80% do and most sufferers do not respond to medication. While this is a mind disorder, the chances to treat it completely using medication are reduced, or getting close to zero. This is the main reason most sufferers seek further help. Natural cures for anxiety proved to work better than medication.

Anxiety disorders can basically reduce the quality of your social and personal life. And if you suffer from anxiety you know well how it feels. Being a former anxiety sufferer myself, I do know very well how horrible panic attacks are. Here are a few methods to reduce your anxiety levels and panic attacks tenfold:

Relaxation. Learning to relax is the vital key to a healthy body and mind. Anxiety disorders are the body`s response to high stress and ongoing worries. Yoga techniques will help, however yoga methods do require lots of time to be mastered. Try to avoid things that may remind you of possible traumas you had in the past, and keep your mind distracted at all times. Listening to relaxation music does work as well, it`s highly recommended.

Exercises. People that don`t practice exercises at all, are more likely to suffer from anxiety, panic attacks, chronic stress or depression. The main reason for that is because exercises do not only keep your body in shape but they are true stress relievers, that will keep your mind healthy on the long run. Try to do exercises at least 10 minutes in the morning, right after you wake up and 10 – 15 minutes before going to sleep as well.

Getting enough sleep. The average human needs at least 6 hours of sleep every night, however people affected by anxiety disorders need a bit more. 8 – 10 hours of sleep will help you reduce you anxiety by 50%. Not only you will feel less tensioned over the day but you will be able to prevent future panic attacks if you get enough sleep.

All of these techniques are vital for a healthy body and mind, you will be able to reduce your levels of anxiety, however I can not guarantee that you will be able to cure yourself from anxiety and panic attacks completely.

It`s important to know that panic attacks can be treated using natural anxiety treatments, you can even do it from the comfort of your own home.
