Anxiety is a normal and natural emotional response to a threatening condition. Feeling of nervousness, fear and unease affects just every one of us at some stage of life or another, whether at a speech conference, an interview, examination or at work. Commonly, most of us experiencing anxiety would adapt to the stressful or tense situation and this feeling will eventually subside in due course. Nevertheless, when the state of anxiety reached an excessive, intense and prolonged phase which affects ones ordinary activities, it implies a potential mental state generally termed as anxiety disorder. As anxiety disorder is a treatable medical condition, one should seek the appropriate treatments and medication to control and cure the condition and should not view it as a weakness or instability of character.

Recovery is a possibility if the combination of appropriate treatments is sought. With a great number of medication treatments available for the varying anxiety disorders, the doctors and psychiatrist are best able to diagnose your anxiety complaints to suggest and get you started on the most appropriate treatment for your specific medical condition. On a personal note, is it important that you appreciate the fact that if the effectiveness of a treatment course falls short of your expectation, there is other combination of treatments that would best control and alleviate your anxiety disorder permanently.

From the wide selection of available remedies and treatment options, you should evaluate the suitability of these alternatives and its effect in order to settle on the products or methods that best reflect your condition. Again, remember that it is always best to discuss and consult the with your doctor or psychiatric specialist to better understand the nature of these remedies and to gauge if the treatment selections are best fit for treating your anxiety and panic disorders.Traditionally, psychotherapy and prescriptive medication have been most commonly used and recently, complimentary and alternative medicines have gained popularity for its natural healing power. Although the effectiveness of alternative medicines in healing anxiety disorders have yet to be fully established but many trials have shed some lights on its use for such purposes.

Conventional treatment of anxiety disorder is no other than the traditional prescription of medications for lowering the chemical substances in the body that leads to constant anxiety. These medications, some of which can relieve the symptoms of anxiety quickly with few side effects, are also commonly used for treatment of depression. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and Beta-blockers are few examples of these medicines. Generally, medication alone is not enough and the treatment normally has to involve some forms of psychotherapy simultaneously. The main reason is that while medications allow the patients to better deal with anxiety disorders and relieve those adverse effects felt by them, long term use may lead to over reliance on these drugs.

Introduction of earlier techniques of Acupuncture and Ayurveda in controlling anxiety disorders has gradually been accepted as an option of alternative anxiety treatment. These treatments can help to restore comfort and release tension and negative sensation by stimulating internal energy flows that relieve the imbalance of tension build-up in the specific organs. They use essential oils derived from flowers, herbs and plants as well as sterilized acupuncture needles to stimulate the effect of relaxation and energy through scent.

Another alternative anxiety treatment is Gemstone therapy. Here its believed that gemstones have properties that can correct imbalances within your body. Each gemstone that is used in this treatment has healing properties and colors. The right balance can be achieved by placing a gemstone at a specific point on your body.

The choices of alternative therapies and anxiety management techniques are not only numerous, they can be very diverse in nature which extends from exposure therapy, relaxation techniques and supplements, self esteem therapy, cognitive therapy to anxiety education, attention training, nutrition, exercise, assertion and so forth. As long as the core anxiety can be addressed in a structured and supportive anxiety treatment course, full recovery is a certainty.

The occurrences on Social Anxiety Disorder have not been recent or new in the era of anxiety disorders despite the heightened attention from the medical community and media in recent years. Research and developments into Social Anxiety have witnessed great improvements in medications used for treating Social Anxiety. These Social Anxiety specific medications are widely available in the marketplace nowadays even though there are a great deal of other general anti-anxiety medications that produce the same effects as those specific-purpose medications.

Social Anxiety Disorder or in other word, social phobia can be described as a marked and persistent fear that arises due to triggering embarrassment or anxiety that a social event or situation ensues. An individual with social anxiety disorder typically anticipate poor performance or judgment by people that would result in his or her feeling of embarrassment or anxiety. In public places regardless of interviews, meetings, speech, work or just any other social activities, the person will inevitably suspect or feel himself or herself being watched or evaluated by other people in one way or another. When these anticipatory actions and its consequent symptoms become so severe that they interferes with the persons day-to-day ordinary routines and social activities, he or she would simply avoid all kinds of social gatherings to prevent himself or herself in a humiliating position.

With plenty of variety of medications available to treat social anxiety disorder, it is imperative that your complaints represent those of the disorder by critically evaluating the symptoms described below. It is useful to gain an understanding of the difference between anxiety that is normal and facilitative; and anxiety that is debilitative and counterproductive before you jump start on any treatment course.

The emotional apprehension of people suffering from social anxiety disorder is very distorting and significant to their lives in that it affects their ability to concentrate on daily routines or even stirs up a fear of madness or losing their minds, insomnia and excessive anxiety. It follows that these people will also experience physical symptoms that include shortness of breath, stomach ache, muscle twitches, excessive sweating and fast heartbeat. Due to the heightened feeling of fear and embarrassment that elicit anxiety and distress at the extreme end of the continuum, these symptoms greatly indicate that social anxiety disorder has resulted.

Should you discover your social anxiety symptoms at an initial phase of the disorder, medication treatments have demonstrated robust and dramatic improvement to relieving you of your symptoms. Among other possible alternative treatments for social anxiety disorder, psychological therapies have also proven to be helpful for many patients with the similar problems. Depending on the magnitude and severity of the condition, social anxiety responds different to different therapies and therefore, do not hesitate to consult with your doctor in discovering the right alternatives for your complaints. You deserve to enjoy social events and situations in a relaxed and stress-free experience. Help yourself by seeking attention and care to benefit from these treatments now!

Anxiety – it’s something everyone experiences from time to time. But for some it’s an ongoing, life-disrupting pain in the tush. Aside from understanding anxiety purely within the context of how it feels – well – just what exactly is it? See, I believe finding the answer to this question is the longest first step toward learning to manage anxiety and its fallout.

Now, coming to know the concept of anxiety at a healing level calls for a bit more than a quick glance at a dictionary. Yes, it calls for a bit of psycho-babble. But hang in there, as I think you’ll find these two theoretical points of view interesting and relevant.

The fans in the psychoanalytic section of the stadium would more than likely root for the theories of Sigmund Freud, who just happens to be the father (you’ll make him neurotic if you even imply “mother”) of psychoanalysis. Of particular note is Uncle Siggy’s structural theory, which proposes the human psyche has three components – the id: home of our inborn primitive desires, which stomps its feet and demands immediate gratification and release no matter the consequences (the “pleasure principle”); the superego: our active conscious, which maintains a sense of morality and prohibits the practice of social taboos; and the ego: our great internal mediator, managing the interplay of the id, superego, and our external world.

Now, according to Freud, the ego is especially significant because it strives to establish a state of balance and peace between our primitive drives, morals, and world-reality. So the ego has its work cut out for it as it deals with some incredibly powerful forces. All of this said, when our id demands some sort of immediate primal satisfaction, and our superego responds that such behavior is totally inappropriate, our ego gets put to the test and can easily become overwhelmed. According to Uncle Siggy, it’s this dynamic that generates anxiety. And anxiety is all about sounding a 150-decibel alarm so the ego knows it, as well as its designated-human, is in peril. There are other paradigms (foundational philosophical/theoretical frameworks of a school of thought or discipline) I find attractive. Here’s one of them.

The cognitivists, who subscribe to the notion that emotional distress is generated when we fail to identify the details of our thought patterns and make indicated adjustments, would submit anxiety is not a direct cause of this distress. Indeed, the seemingly endless waves of anxiety many endure are the result of a faulty internal fear response system that demands immediate attention to real or perceived danger. Now, the keyword in the last sentence is “perceived.” Come on – it’s no great secret that in the vast majority of cases our sensed dangers aren’t based in rational fact. Right? And if the present danger isn’t rationally-real then the subsequent anxiety becomes inappropriate and counterproductive to our immediate and future functioning.

So, then – according to the cognitivists issue numero uno isn’t the generation of anxiety, because in the midst of dangerous circumstances it’s supposed to make an appearance. And if you think about it, doesn’t it make sense that human genetics would foster a leaning toward the anxious? Sure. And that’s because an alarm system that doesn’t give a rip about what exactly set it off provides maximum protection in any situation where disaster may well be lurking. And having a leg-up on such disaster is well worth the cost of troublesome false alarms.

See, the cognitivists would propose the issue that causes all the problems within the realm of anxiety are the thought patterns that are foundational in the misinterpretation of internal and external stimuli (a shortened breath, a heart palpitation, boarding an airplane, crossing a bridge) leading to overreaction to a perceived reality. You see, the true threat here actually becomes the creation and impact of faulty thinking patterns, misinterpretations, and overreactions. And that’s what makes anxiety a major liability.

To assist you in organizing and understanding the two anxiety theories I’ve just reviewed, how ‘bout this summary.

PsychoanalyticUnconscious forces collide as the id pushes toward immediate gratification of a primal desire, and the superego tells it to chill-out because it isn’t socially acceptable. The ego, in a frantic attempt to mediate, becomes overwhelmed and anxiety is generated. Anxiety is a message – an alarm – to the ego that it, and the individual, is in danger.

CognitiveAnxiety is not a direct cause of distress, but the result of a faulty internal fear response system. It’s an emotional reaction in response to the cognitive process of fear. The generation of anxiety is designed to be a call to action – an alarm – to deescalate a world-real threat. But the threat may be a perceived reality based upon misinterpretation

So there’s the scoop from just two theoretical perspectives regarding the origin of anxiety. And as you can well imagine there are many more points of view floating around out there. The importance of such formal definitions is in learning all we can about icky stuff that impacts our lives. And the more we know, the better armed we become. Right?

Anxiety – learn and find relief.

For many people the trigger is financial turmoil, job related difficulties, or accumulated stress. These conditions build up and weigh heavily on you over time, increasing your susceptibility to panic attacks and then specific, worrisome thoughts act as triggers to get you going on a panic attack or anxiety ridden episode.

Another contributing factor to your susceptibility to panic attacks or even a trigger for anxiety episodes themselves is an improper diet and dehydration.

During times of stress or worry, people have one of two tendencies;

- they either eat too much – or they stop eating enough

Either one of these conditions could be placing an undue burden on your body or mind. Starving yourself causes your body to go into survival mode, the same type of state that your body turns to during a fight or flight episode. Your body is now more susceptible to a panic attack and anxiety symptoms.

Likewise, overeating can cause your body to experience unpleasant physical sensations. Overeating can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, weight gain and general sluggishness.

These problems can all contribute to your body feeling far worse than it should, mimicking the physical symptoms of anxiety. Moreover, the increasing numbers appearing on that scale might cause you to go into a panic attack all on your own!

In addition to a proper diet, supplying your body with enough fluids is a crucial part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and reducing the potential for anxiety problems.

Dehydration is a great way to send your body into panic mode. Drinking soda or coffee all day does not equal hydration! Soda, while liquid, is not providing the hydration level your body needs and it is full of caffeine, sugar or sugar substitutes.

These are great ways to get your body keyed up, a definite no, no for anxiety sufferers. Coffee comes loaded with these same problems. Try drinking a bottle of water a day and I´m not talking about a little bottle either. Get a liter size bottle of water and fill it up each day. Spend your day consuming that and in a few weeks you won´t believe the difference in the way you feel.

I´m not telling you anything you don´t already know. We are constantly barraged with information about how to take better care of ourselves, stop smoking, lessen our caffeine intake, eat a proper, moderated and nutritious diet, and exercise regularly.

This is the feel good prescription that we have been receiving for years from doctors, TV hosts and anyone else who felt compelled to tell us how to lead a better life. While this prescription is certainly a good one, most people neglect to tell you, that a deficiency in any one of these areas can greatly affect you in the others.

Most of us think if we exercise a couple of times a week, we can still eat McDonald´s. Wrong!

Most of us think if we stop smoking, we can drink soda. Wrong!

We have to be cognizant of all the areas of our health and work to improve each one of them. A poor diet can affect our body, even if we exercise regularly. Therefore, you are still susceptible to panic attacks and anxiety based phobias and fears. Your inattention to your overall health could be having more of a negative effect on your emotional well being than you think.

Your physical health can have a profound effect on your mental health. While you may think your anxiety problem is all in your mind that is far from the truth. The body and mind feed off of each other and lack of health in one part can lead to problems in the other.

If you´ve had panic attacks, think about it for a minute. Was the panic attack only in your mind or did you experience physical effects as well?

You probably had a racing heart and shortness of breath; you may have had tingling in your extremities and problems with your digestive functions. These sensations probably made you even more upset and nervous, adding fire to the panic attack overtaking you.

The same is true for anxiety sufferers. It is important to get your physical and mental house in order. Taking proper care of your body, through proper diet and exercise, will help you manage your stress and anxiety more effectively.

Generalized anxiety disorder or GAD is characterized by excessive, exaggerated anxiety and worry about everyday life events. People with symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder tend to always expect disaster and can’t stop worrying about health, money, family, work or school. In people with GAD, the worry often is unrealistic or out of proportion for the situation. Daily life becomes a constant state of worry, fear and dread.

Generalized anxiety disorder often begins at an early age, and the symptoms may develop more slowly than in other anxiety disorders. Many people with generalized anxiety disorder can’t recall when they last felt relaxed or at ease.

One of the most common questions asked with reference to anxiety and stress is whether or not these conditions cause heart disease.

Panic attacks usually involve sudden development of emotions such as anxiety, fear or extreme feeling of discomfort. These emotions are followed by some additional symptoms.Â

Panic attacks have always been associated to cardiovascular risks such as anger, depression and even hostility. Hypertension is yet another symptom associated to panic attacks. Anxiety or stress is known to add up to adverse effects of cardiovascular problems including enhanced blood clotting tendency, coronary artery spasm or heart rhythm disturbances.

Does stress actually increases the risk of heart attack?

According to a recent research it has been indicated that people with stress or panic disorders tend to possess a more active coagulation System and inhibited fibrinolysis. The result was not expected as there was no injury other than some breaks in the skin occurred due to blood sampling.

This clearly indicates that the clotting was unbalanced. This can be quite dangerous because a coronary artery may get blocked in extreme cases. However, the levels of coagulation measured were just within the range considered normal.

This research came up with an explanation of a data displaying. People with stress or panic disorder being four times more prone to die of a heart attack or stroke. Hence, when there are several other factors including smoking or obesity to enhance the risk of heart disease, a stress disorder can enhance the balance of coagulation further to danger zone.Â

It is very important to diagnose stress or anxiety disorder as soon as possible. Treatment given at an early stage tends to inhibit the chances of any kind of heart disease. Â

Anxiety or stress is also known to make a patient get a feeling like heart attack due to rapid pulse and shortness of breath. According to a study of more than three thousand older women, it is suggested that shortness of breath or rapid pulse experienced due to stress may evoke a feeling similar to heart attack and even result in serious heart troubles in the long run.

Studies have also revealed that women who have experienced a full blown panic or stress attack in 6 months were more vulnerable to stroke or heart attack as compared to those who didn´t experienced stress or panic attack.

The researchers also considered a lot of other risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, depression and in activity. However, they still came to a conclusion that stress and panic attack enhanced risks of heart related disease.

Women undergoing symptoms of post menopause tend to take a lot of stress and this is known to be one of the major causes of cardiovascular risk. Mental stress is always bad for health and may result in a lot of adverse effects.

A lot of scientific evidences have suggested that metal stress tend to affect the cardiovascular System adversely. Tasks promoting stress can result in blood flow decrease to the heart that ultimately result in a lot of heart related diseases such as a heart attack.

Many people have funny notions about what causes anxiety attacks. There are all kinds of myths and misinformation. Anxiety attacks are hard to deal with as it is without having people look at you strangely, like you are afflicted with some sort of communicable disease. Worse yet some people banter around the word crazy when referring to people with anxiety attacks.
If you are a person that is dealing with anxiety attacks, finding information about what the cause of anxiety attack is can be frustrating. There are many different ideas about the causes of anxiety attacks and some of them are wrong. When a person is having regular anxiety attacks they can feel depressed and bad about themselves because they feel it is their fault. Many people feel they are the cause of the anxiety attack and that if they just had greater control over themselves that they would not have them.
Suffererss who have knowledge about the cause of anxiety attacks are the individuals who are most likely to succeed and breakthrough and having this is one of the greatest tools to use to stop them. It is knowledge, not control that is the key to overcoming anxiety attacks.
One of the more common myths about the cause of anxiety attacks is that a person is going crazy, more specifically, that they have some form of schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a genetic disorder that is not caused by anxiety. It may contain anxiety components, but is much different than anxiety attacks. People with schizophrenia usually have disjointed thoughts, speech babbling and are plagued with delusions and hallucinations. People with anxiety attacks usually do not suffer from these symptoms.
Schizophrenia usually begins in a persons teen age years and is diagnosable by age 25. Schizophrenia is not a disorder than suddenly appears; it is a gradual debilitating disease that a person is born with. So unless you have a strong family history of schizophrenia it is not something you should worry about nor should you think that it is a cause of your anxiety attack.
Another belief about the cause of anxiety attacks is that it is about losing control. People believe that they will die, lose organ function or lose their grip on reality. People believe that you might go on killing spree or pass out in a car and run into a shopping mall.
These are all fallacies of the mind. You are not going to do any of those things. Anxiety is the bodies natural response to feeling that it is in danger. Anxiety is not dangerous and neither are you.
A lot of people with panic attacks believe they are going to lose total control of themselves. The fact is that most of the anxiety attack occurs in the mind. People around the person having the attack rarely notice they are having a problem. The fear of embarrassing yourself can actually make the anxiety worse. It is the feeling of losing control in front of others that can trigger the anxiety attack. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy except that people usually never lose control of themselves during an anxiety attack.
Some people feel that when an anxiety attack occurs that they will pass out in a public place. They imagine that they will be in the middle of a grocery store lying prone and unconscious in the floor. Worse than that some people believe that they will have an attack and no one will be around. They worry that they will be strewn in some ditch somewhere.
The fact is the fainting is not common with people having a panic attack. Fainting is usually the result of not enough oxygen going to the brain. When a person is having an anxiety attack their heart is usually pumping hard to circulate oxygen rich blood through out the body. A person may feel light headed because they may be hyperventilating but this usually does not lead to a fainting spell.
Another myth about anxiety attacks is that they are somehow caused by the heart. People believe they are having a heart attack. They feel tightness or pain in their chest, their heart is beating fast, they may be sweating and their respirations have increased. It is easy to see where the myth came from but the heart is not the cause of an anxiety attack not does an anxiety attack result in a heart attack.
Heart attacks usually occur when the heart is under stress that is during physical exertion. Panic attacks occur at anytime. Heart attacks are usually abated by resting and reducing the stress on the heart. A panic attack usually goes on and a person must calm themselves mentally before it really begins to subside. It is not a matter of control; it is more a matter of relinquishing control.
If you were to hook a person up to an EKG that is having a heart attack you would see unusual heart beats. A person having an anxiety attack usually only has an elevated heart rate.
The best way to reduce your anxiety of your heart is to see your doctor and have an EKG. Once you realize there is nothing to worry about it should reduce your anxiety over having a heart attack.
As you can see people worry about symptoms of anxiety attacks and misdiagnose themselves. They believe that the cause of an anxiety attack is mental or physical disease. Once they realize that it is not they can learn to overcome anxiety attacks for good.
